New to curling or just returning? This is the league for you. We focus on fun and comradery while learning the game in a safe and helpful setting. What do you need? Warm clothes, a clean indoor pair of flat soled shoes. Narrow soles are best. Plan to bring the same shoes to wear each time. Grippers are sized to those shoes on the first day. What do you get? You get your own grippers to keep ($45 value). Free rental of a broom, stabilizer and slider.
***Returning members for a "second 10 sessions" *** must pay registration fees - Club capital expenditure fee and BC Curling affiliation fee (under 60 - $83, Over 60 - $91), first time registants will have the NCC cover those costs. Returning curlers will be billed their Membership Fees separately. You will be invoiced by the club for these fees.
This league has two sessions with 10 weeks each. The first session starts in October and wraps up in December. The second session begins in January and finishes at the end of March. Participants may enter one or both sessions. There are spaces for 48 novices joined by 16 volunteer coaches. Curlers with 2 years or less experience or individuals recently returning to curling after a long break are considered novices for this league.
The first week new curlers learn to deliver stones, and in the following five weeks the novices are placed on teams with one volunteer coach. The coaches are arranged in alternating positions of third or skip, so that there is an experienced curler at both ends of the sheet at all times. The teams are shuffled after five weeks. If registrants request to be kept with a partner they are placed on teams together. Forty-five minute theory sessions are given prior to each on-ice game at 6:40 - 7:25pm. Topics covered include instructional videos as well as discussions on basic rules, vocabulary, etiquette, scoreboard, sweeping, signals, weight calls, equipment, stone release, team communication, measuring, basic strategy, and many other topics.
*We limit the each curler to a max of 2 sessions of Learn to Curl. After completing one or more sessions curlers are encouraged to join any league at NCC. If you are looking for the next step, join the Friday's 4 @ 4, Sunday's Triples, Sunday Open, or Wednesday Night Open. These focused on Newer Curlers, continued learning, a chance to play multiple positions and can be registered as a single or paired with another registrant.*
