President's Update - April 15, 2020

An update from our President

Hello NCC members,
It has been one month since our season ended early due to coronavirus concerns. I would like to update our members on the current status of the club and what the Board of Directors and our manager are doing to safeguard NCC during these unusual times.
After leagues ended on March 13, the ice shutdown process started, and was complete by the end of March. The club is closed. Currently all events booked at the curling centre through May 31 have been cancelled or postponed. Additional cancellations will occur if we remain unable to safely host groups. Season wrap-up events remain indefinitely postponed.
The Annual General Meeting scheduled to be held in June is postponed until the fall. We hope to be able to host the AGM in person at that time and will provide ample notice of the date, both by email and on our website. If we are still unable to gather in the fall, we will arrange to hold the AGM virtually. The Societies Act of British Columbia allows us to hold our AGM any time prior to December 31 each calendar year, so we have some flexibility in the date, but I believe an in-person meeting would be preferable to a virtual AGM. Our Board of Directors will remain in place until the AGM is held. Thank you to those Board members whose term is expiring this year for delaying their departure from the Board until the fall. I am glad to have your help as we navigate this unprecedented event.
Financially the club is still in good shape, but we have experienced a loss of revenue from the early closure, and cancellations of the Spring Fling bonspiel and event bookings. Our manager, Andrea Trepanier, is working to minimize expenses while we are closed. Non-essential utilities such as TV service have been cancelled. No ProShop inventory orders will be placed until we’re able to reopen. Andrea is researching government grant and loan programs and will apply for these as appropriate. Our Treasurer, Tom Weinreich, is keeping a close eye on our financial status.
We would like to thank the hundreds of members who did not request a refund for league games missed due to our early shutdown. Your generous donation will help us to keep the club in good financial shape while we are closed. If you would like a refund for missed games after March 13, please email Andrea at by April 30th. Refunds will not be processed after that date.
While we hope to be able to reopen as scheduled in the fall, we realize that we may not be able to do so. Andrea and the Board are currently proceeding with plans for a standard season next year, but we are developing contingency plans in case that’s not possible. We will update our members over the summer as the coronavirus situation continues to evolve.
Please continue to follow the advice of local, provincial, and federal health authorities. Stay home if you can, keep 2 metres apart if you can’t, and wash your hands often. Stay safe and healthy. I hope to see you back on the ice in the fall.
